john rawlings (1912-1970): fashion photographer extraordinaire (and american, too!)

My new favorite fashion photographer is John Rawlings, whose work I was only tangentially aware of before coming across this book of his work for Vogue where you can find additional images. Here’s another link to a lot of black-and-whites, including portraits of famous friends (Irving Penn, Alfred Hitchcock, both obvious influences). Some of the work is conventional, as is to be expected given the vagaries of the fashion world, and 30 years is a long career, and I imagine changing editorial attitudes dictated a lot of that convention. REGARDLESS there are SO many AMAZING exceptions to the rule, and in particular these eccentric mise en scenes, some in technicolor, others noirish, all with a great avant-garde edge. What an amazing talent!
